Employee Relations

As one of the most trusted names in Canadian retailing, Shoppers Drug Mart’s 50-plus years of success can be attributed, in part, to a performance culture, where people care about improving the health and well-being of Canadians.  That performance culture is based on our CORE values: Care - improving the health and well-being of Canadians; Ownership – approaching every day with personal accountability and commitment; Respect – acting with integrity, respect and openness every day; and Excellence – leading together through innovation and superior performance.

The culture of our Company is reflected in how we come together to accomplish a common set of goals. This past year, Shoppers Drug Mart was recognized with two prestigious awards that celebrate our employer programs and our culture. In October 2012, we were named as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers in recognition of our innovative employee programs in training and skills development, community involvement and work environment. We were also named as one of ten recipients of the 2012 Canada’s Passion Capitalists. This award celebrates organizations that have achieved long-term success as a result of their Passion Capital; a culture that possesses the energy, intensity and sustainability to consistently generate superior results.

Engagement and recognition

Our continued success depends on our ability to attract and retain talented people and engage them in achieving our business goals. We recognize how important it is that employees understand our purpose and how they impact our success. Engagement stems from keeping employees informed of our progress and soliciting their feedback, and we continue to strengthen the communications vehicles to allow this flow of information.  Our Associate-owners hold regular face-to-face meetings with their employees. Central office leaders conduct quarterly meetings with their teams to discuss Company performance, successes and new initiatives.

We value employees’ views and ideas and encourage their feedback through our annual engagement survey for central and regional office and store employees. Employees’ responses reflect the impact of our employee programs and help to identify opportunities for improvement and track our progress. In 2012, 89% of central office employees and 94% of store employees responded to questions about the workplace, including such topics as recognition, career development and community investment. This was the highest level of participation in the four years of conducting this survey. Engagement scores increased overall, with improvement in many areas including support for health and well-being and our role in the community, among other factors. Higher levels of engagement positively impact the success of Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix in a number of ways, including increased retention.

Recognition is an important part of our culture. Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix has several peer-nominated recognition programs including Beyond the Call for central office employees,The Extra Mile for store employees, and Associate of the Year, Front Store Manager of the Year, and We Care Awards for pharmacists. These programs are highly valued by Associate-owners and employees as opportunities to further strengthen engagement and recognize excellence.

Leadership and development

Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix encourages continuous learning to assist employees in achieving their career development goals and to ensure that we have the talent required to support growth and promote from within. Store and central office employees have access to a wide range of on-demand e-learning opportunities via our learning management portal, Shoppers Drug Mart University.

To support the leadership development of store employees, we offer several programs including: LEAD (Leadership Excellence and Development), from which 530 future Associate-owners, store managers and cosmetic managers graduated in 2012; and Building Your Business: The First 90 Days, a blended learning program comprised of e-learning, on-the-job training and collaboration with a network of business resources, which was completed by 44 new Associate-owners last year.

Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix is an advocate of pharmacy education in Canada. In the last five years, we’ve employed over 700 pharmacy summer students, funded over 450 student scholarships and hired over 500 Canadian pharmacy school graduates. We have also provided support to numerous pharmacy education initiatives across the country, including the combined Pharmacy/MBA program at the University of Alberta and the Shoppers Drug Mart Chair in Entrepreneurial Business at the School of Pharmacy, University of Waterloo.
